Copeptin is a cleaved fragment of AVP-NPII which functions as a hypothalamic hormone. Neurophysin 2 specifically binds vasopressin. Vasopressin has a direct antidiuretic action on the kidney, it also causes vasoconstriction of the peripheral vessels.

Copeptin is secreted in equimolar ratio to AVP, but is more stable in circulation [1].
